Background of the Study
Flooding has become a recurrent environmental challenge in Jigawa State, causing widespread displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and contamination of water sources. One of the most significant but often overlooked consequences of flooding is the increased prevalence of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, and cholera. Stagnant water left behind by floods creates breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and other vectors, leading to heightened health risks (Ahmed & Garba, 2024).
According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet, 2023), Jigawa State experiences seasonal flooding due to heavy rainfall, poor drainage systems, and the overflow of major rivers. These floods not only displace thousands of residents but also contribute to the spread of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. Malaria, for instance, remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the state, with transmission rates peaking during and after the rainy season (Bashir & Usman, 2023).
Despite efforts by public health authorities to control vector-borne diseases, including the distribution of insecticide-treated nets and environmental sanitation campaigns, the impact of flooding on disease outbreaks remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the relationship between flooding and the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in Jigawa State, providing insights into effective mitigation strategies to reduce public health risks.
Statement of the Problem
Jigawa State experiences recurrent flooding, which has been linked to increasing cases of vector-borne diseases. The stagnation of floodwaters provides ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, leading to frequent malaria outbreaks. Similarly, poor sanitation during floods contributes to the spread of diseases such as cholera and typhoid (Ali & Musa, 2024).
Although various public health interventions have been introduced, their effectiveness in controlling disease outbreaks following floods remains uncertain. There is a need to conduct a comprehensive study to establish the link between flooding and vector-borne diseases, identify high-risk areas, and propose effective prevention and control measures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on selected flood-prone communities in Jigawa State, assessing the relationship between flooding and disease outbreaks. Data will be collected from health records, meteorological reports, and community surveys.
Limitations include the challenge of differentiating between flood-related disease outbreaks and other contributing factors such as climate change and human migration. Additionally, variations in disease reporting systems may affect data accuracy.
